NIST hash function update

Watching from afar, particularly via the mailing list discussions, I've been following the progress on the NIST hash function competition.  Bruce Schneier offers an update in Wired:  America's Next Top Hash Function Begins

The process issues and questions are almost as interesting as the math - in my opinion the NIST competition model provides a good, and improving, model for  harnessing the talents of interested experts to develop new tools we can all benefit from.   I imagine there are many other domains where this approachis or could be valuable.
